“Miss Ellie, Miss Ellie – come quick, it’s Rebecca!”

“Rebecca, whatever happened to you? And where did you get this filthy dog? Come here and tell me.”

“Momma, I was walking home from Penny’s party. Oh Momma, it was so much fun, we sang, played games and a man was doing magic tricks, and”

“Rebecca, STOP! Tell me how you got so dirty? You can tell me about the party later.”

“Well, I was walking home and I went to see what the Westlake’s are doing in their yard. It’s a pool, Momma, can we have a pool?”

“REBECCA!”

“Well, This little puppy was stuck in the mud and I tried to help him and fell down. He was so sad so I picked him up and brought him home. Can we keep him, Momma, can we?”

“No, Rebecca. He belongs to somebody and they are probably looking for him. Now, go get cleaned up and don’t make a mess. Get Elsie to help you. You will stay home with Elsie tonight. Daddy and I are going to the Martin’s for dinner.”

“Peter, come take this dog. We need to find out who he belongs to. And clean up this porch.”
