WELCOME! Something a little different this week. Let’s do TRUE or FALSE.

“The Old Man and the Sea” is Hemingway’s last and best major work of fiction. Published in 1952 it received the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and is believed to be responsible for Hemingway being awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1954.

Hemingway had the idea for “The Old Man and the Sea” in his mind for many years; it wasn’t until more than a decade after his last novel, when people felt he was done writing, that he wrote the story. He wanted to prove to the critics that he still had his best work yet to write.

LIFE Magazine featured a full printing of “The Old Man and the Sea” in its September 1952 issue. Five million copies of the magazine sold out in two days. Peruse the digitized issue online.
