Four for Friday  – April 9 – Happy Birthday to Me!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

I love gardening and have learned so much over these many years. Today I invite you to join me in celebrating those many wonderful years of gardening.

As gardening season is kicking off for many, I have a few tips to share.

Epsom Salts

Epsom salts is a great source of magnesium, much needed by tomatoes and peppers. When planting these put a few spoonfuls in the hole or pot. You will have greener, more fruitful plants. Epsom salts also prevent root rot (the black bottoms) on tomatoes.

Coffee Filters

Line the bottoms of flower pots with coffee filters to keep the dirt from seeping through the drainage hole. The filters also help to retain moisture in the pot and keep plants from drying out to quickly.

Coffee and Coffee Grounds

Use your leftover morning coffee and coffee grounds as fertilizer. Roses especially benefit from a morning pick-me-up. The paper filters also biodegrade quickly, so they can go in the garden or compost as well.

Ketchup

Do you have some rusty metal planters, lawn ornaments or furniture?  Slather the rust spots with ketchup. The acid in the vinegar acts to remove the rust.

Personally, I think this is an expensive waste of ketchup. But, in a pinch – it might be good to know.

Have you used any of these in your garden? I’d love to hear any of your experiences or gardening tips

  1. First, I wish you a very Happy Birthday. Enjoy your day!

One of my favourite tips is Irish Spring soap. We had problems keeping bunnies out of our garden in the past. Our peas and beans didn’t have a chance. Last year, I put little bundles of Irish Spring soap around the perimeter of the garden and it worked!
