Once upon a time there was a wee child called Polly. Polly was a quiet and shy lass who spent her days sitting alone beside the pond. One day four fluffy yellow ducklings appeared and swam up to see her.
“Who are you?” they asked.
“My name is Polly and I live in the big white house across this meadow. I have not seen you here before, where did you come from?”
They told her how they had left their home many miles away because of the dangers there. They told her about their brother who had run away. “He was different, Ugly.” they said, laughing.
Polly, being the sweet, kind child that she was, asked, “Would you like to hear a story?” “Yes, Yes, Yes,” they cheered. So, Polly told them the story of an “Ugly Duckling”* who became a beautiful white swan.
The four little ones vowed to find their brother and never laugh at him again.
THE END.
“The Ugly Duckling” is a literary fairy tale written by poet and author Han Christian Anderson and first published in 1843.
