Compassion is at the heart of everything we do. It is the dearest quality we possess. Yet all too often it can be cast aside with consequences too tragic to speak of. To lose our compassion, we lose what it is to be human.

Yesterday I heard an interview with a nurse in a South Dakota hospital as she described how the coronavirus has affected her community, her patients and herself. She said:
The day before more people died in South Dakota than live in her small town of 650 people.
She treats patients who do not believe they have COVID even as they take their last breath. They prefer to think they have some other disease, like cancer, than believe COVID is real.
Every day she wakes up knowing what she will be facing when she gets to work. She goes and does it!
Social media is full of posts and tweets from people who believe COVID is a hoax. Some simply choose to recklessly disregard guidelines. By not wearing a mask or being socially distanced they feel it is protecting their freedom. They choose not to protect themselves to the detriment of others.
As the virus rages around the world, we are grateful to people like the nurse in South Dakota and the millions of people who do adhere to the guidelines, who care about others.
No matter where you live — Be safe! Be healthy! Be compassionate!
